Gary Dolphin

“James Earl Jones likes to bet the dogs”

This week’s Moonlighter is the voice of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Gary Dolphin. Dolph is an Iowa sports guy to the core. Baseball is just part of the way he was raised growing up in eastern Iowa. And like most of us when Field of Dreams came out, a game of catch has just a little bit more of a special meaning. Dolph sat down with Tim to talk about a little bit of everything in the world of Iowa sports history as well as his upcoming keynote speech at the Iowa Catholic Men’s Conference.

Gary Dolphin grew up around town team baseball and is a veritable record book when it comes to some of the names and family of the favorite sons of eastern Iowa. Dolph and Tim first crossed paths a few years ago when the voice of the Hawkeyes took the mic for the celebrity softball game at the Field of Dreams. Meanwhile, Tim was living out a dream of playing as Moonlight Graham for the ghost team.

When you have been around sports for as long as Gary Dolphin has, you are sure to have lots of stories and interesting connections. Dolph is able to share a story for just about every name you can think of. He has sure seen a thing or two in Iowa sports while serving as the voice of the Iowa Hawkeyes for over 25 years.

There’s a lot more to Gary Dolphin than just sports though. Tim and Gary share their thoughts on the Catholic faith and the importance of religion in our world today ahead of his upcoming keynote. Certainly, a lot has changed both on and off the diamond in the last sixty years.
