Marathons & Turkey Trots

Band-aid the nips!

26.2. That number represents a lot of things to a lot of people. To some, it is a foolish challenge that takes a lot of time and causes a lot of pain. For others it is something of a symbolic achievement; a goal to push oneself to great limits. This week it is just Tom Griffin and Tim Flattery sitting in the Moonlight Studios to share their marathon experiences. Between the two they have run 3 marathons and several half marathons and have quite a few thoughts on the world of running from their very amateur perspective.

A few weeks ago Moonlight Tim took it upon himself to reach a goal that he had long held - to run a marathon. However, going against conventional wisdom, Tim skipped the training portion of the marathon and skipped right to the physical and mental challenge of setting off to grind out 26.2 miles. Knowing that the physical toll and time commitment of marathon training were not appealing, he wanted to just see if he could push himself that far, both literally and figuratively.

Tom’s experience goes to the other extreme. After holding the goal of 26.2 in his head, he signed up with friends for a course called Marathon Racing and Training at the University of Iowa. This course focused on creating a training program, load management, nutrition, recovery, and injury management. Whereas Tim took on almost the entire run alone, Tom trained with a group and completed his first marathon in Madison, Wisconsin with friends from the class.

Both guys share their experiences including the positives and negatives of grinding it out for 4-5 hours. They also discuss the world of running and their awe of elites who finish a marathon in half the time of these Moonlighters and wonder about the sanity of ultramarathon runners like our very own Brendan Gargano.
