Spencer Brown

They say good things come in small packages and this week’s guest puts his own spin on that. Spencer Brown was a giant coming out of 8-man football and tiny Lenox, Iowa. Now, Spencer Brown is an absolute force on the field playing right tackle for the Buffalo Bills. How does a guy come from small-town ball and lightly recruited to starting 10 games for one of the best teams in professional football? It’s a tale that Moonlight Graham has told before, a lot of hard work and getting an opportunity.

Spencer Brown grew up in a town of about 1,000 people in southwest Iowa. The Lenox Tigers were an 8-man football school with a 6’8 220-pound stand-out player. He was a standout baseball player as a sophomore but his career was cut short due to surgeries in each of his junior and senior years. He wasn’t a traditional football recruit for a lot of programs because he was coming out of an 8-man program but Mark Farley and the Northern Iowa Panthers were willing to bring in the beanpole tight end and develop him into an offensive lineman.

Showing up on campus, Brown’s first priority was making the team. He started his career in Cedar Falls as a tight end. He was going to meetings, learning the playbook, and focused on learning the 11-man game after his prep career. It didn’t take long though for the UNI strength staff to get their hands on him and set him on a path that would see him transform as an athlete into an NFL-caliber offensive lineman. His eating regimen for that phase of his life sounds like something out of a nightmare Food Network show as he downed thousands of calories a day including middle-of-the-night protein shakes.

All of his hard work on the field, in the weight room, and at the dinner table, paid off though when the Buffalo Bills selected Brown in the 3rd round of the 2021 draft. He celebrated by getting his Bills Mafia baptism and jumped through a table in his front yard in Lenox, IA. He started training that summer with his new teammate, and former Hawkeye, Ike Boettger to get ready for his first NFL training camp. He went on to make 10 starts for a phenomenal Bills team who lost to the Chiefs in one of the greatest playoff games in recent memory. Spencer Brown and the Bills are early favorites for the 2023 Super Bowl.
