Carter Baumler

Now that the players and the league have settled the lockout we are ready for baseball after a (make it) rain delay. This week we have a guy whose career was put on a delay of its own, Carter Baumler.

Carter Baumler is a product of West Des Moines Dowling. He was one of the most sought-after recruits in his class but all along there was a lot of talk about how high he might be drafted. Though he had committed to TCU, one of the top programs in the country, Baumler wanted to see how high he could go before he made his final decision.

After a stellar prep career, Baumler got the call in the 5th round by the Orioles. He had been projected to go closer to the top of the draft and the Orioles were so high on him that they gave him a signing bonus commensurate with being a first or second-round pick.

Waiting until the fifth round wasn’t the biggest delay in his professional career though. Shortly after being drafted Baumler had to have Tommy John surgery. His recovery has progressed to the point that he is ready for his first season of professional baseball. He is currently pulling down in the upper 90s and chomping at the bit to get his chance on the field. He is considered one of the top prospects in the O’s system.
