Scott Christopherson

This week’s Moonlighter made a career out of knowing how to play his role. On the court, he was a deadeye sharpshooter and gritty defender for Fred Hoiberg and the Cyclones. And while Scott Christopherson isn’t technically an Iowan, he certainly became a favorite adopted-son. Tim and Scott sit down this week to talk about all things-Cyclone basketball ahead of this weekend’s Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tourney.

Scott Christopherson grew up in Wisconsin and was named the state’s player of the year in 2007. His stellar prep career led him to Marquette University to play for Tom Crean. But plans changed quickly there as he suffered a knee injury and Tom Crean left for the Indiana job. Christopherson opened up his recruitment and selected Ames, Iowa as his new home but the changes weren’t quite done. His transfer season at ISU ended up being Greg McDermott’s last. TJ Otzelberger was an assistant in Ames for McDermott and stayed on board for the Hoiberg era.

The Cyclone era under Fred Hoiberg, with TJ Otzelberger as a top assistant, was a pretty special time. After a rough first season, the Cyclones improved and Christopherson finished his career as a key part of a 23 win team. Playing alongside big names like Royce White and Chris Babb, Christopherson helped lead the Cyclones to the round of 32 in the 2012 NCAA tourney. Scotty C was a 1,000 point scorer and one of the best shooters in a long line of great shooters in Cardinal and Gold.

Christopherson went on to play two years of professional basketball overseas before returning to the states. Scott Christopherson puts out some really great works with Cyclone Fanatic and provides his keen insights on the Cyclones and one of his former coaches, TJ Otzelberger. When he isn’t doing color commentary or writing about the Cyclones, he is at home wrangling a set of twin boys and Tim was ready for a little advice on how to play zone defense.
