Confessions of a Professional Gambler

The Moonlight Gambler, alias: Tom Hagan, returns to the podcast a year after his uncanny prediction of last year’s scandal at the Kentucky Derby. With one of the most exciting events in sports just around the corner, we wanted to get Tom Hagan back on the pod to talk all things horse racing and give the Moonlight listeners the inside track as they head to the bookies to place their bets.

If you remember last year’s conversation, Tom Hagan actually predicted the Bob Baffert scandal. After talking about the nature of horse racing in this day and age, Hagan called a win for a Baffert horse that would then get popped for PEDs. And just like he said, Medina Spirit won the race and then was stripped of the title. Since then, Baffert remains banned from the sport and Medina Spirit is circling that big race track in the sky.

While we here at the Moonlight Graham Show don’t know a philly from a maiden, Hagan knows the ins and outs from his perspective as both a better and an owner. Horses today are bred to run fast, win a few races, and then be sent to the breeding barn. Unlike the culture of racing in movies like Seabiscuit, horse racing today is a little more like the modern NBA. Even though the horses are top-level athletes, the risk of injury keeps their careers relatively short and trainers err on the side of rest. Hagan shares some of the insights and planning of his ownership group as they find a sire for their mare, and plan for the future.

Looking ahead to the action on the track, Tom Hagan handicaps the field for us. The field this year includes two horses that are connected to Bob Baffert that are projected near the front of the pack. There are some connections to Des Moines and plenty of great horse names like Country Grammer, Uncle Mo, Empire Maker, Cyber Knife and more. Tom and Tim get into some tips for new betters looking to spice things up on the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby this weekend including how to take advantage of the apps and sites.
