Conrad Ray - Stanford Golf Coach & Teammate of Tiger

Oh, I can claim a few rounds against Tiger

This week’s guest on the podcast has had a pretty incredible journey in sports. Conrad Ray went from dreaming of playing football to making a career out of college golf. After pursuing his goal of playing center or nose tackle at Notre Dame, Ray found out that his success as a high school football player in Minnesota just wasn’t quite good enough to play in front of Touchdown Jesus. Plan B turned out to be joining one of the greatest teams in the history of college golf.

Born in Fort Dodge, IA, Conrad Ray and his family moved to Austin, MN when he was a little kid. While he enjoyed golf growing up, it certainly was not his primary sport. Instead he was a multisport athlete with his heart set on the gridiron. Ray was also a talented golfer and by a stroke of luck, Stanford had a spot on their team for a walk-on if he could get into school. Ray joined the Cardinal golf team and was the only freshman on a national championship team that included Tiger Woods, Notah Begay, and Casey Martin.

After finishing his college career at Stanford, Ray competed professionally for a few years before returning to Stanford as a coach. In the last 17 years, Ray has led the Cardinal to the national championships 13 times and has 2 national titles under his belt as a coach, to add to his title as a player.

Ray’s career has been full of All-Conference and Coach of the Year awards. As he approaches 50 years old, Ray has spent almost half of his life as a part of Stanford golf. Near and dear to the Moonlight Graham Show, Ray attributes his success to following the example of hard work set by his dad.
