Larry Corrigan

A baseball legend behind closed doors

This week’s Moonlighter is a Cyclone legend. Larry Corrigan did just about everything for the Cyclones. His career in Cardinal and Gold spanned the early 1970s as a player and then as a coach in the 1980s. Corrigan was an All-American pitcher and catcher, set the Cyclone record for batting average, and then set the record for wins in a season as a coach. Now the Cyclone Hall of Famer sits down to talk about life in baseball and seeing the game from just about every angle.

Larry Corrigan has been a dream guest of the podcast since we started this thing. Corrigan played at Iowa State in the heyday of Cyclone baseball. They won two Big Eight titles and Corrigan led the Clones to the College World Series in 1970 and a fifth-place finish. When his time in Ames was done, he had been named all-conference and All American as both a pitcher and a catcher. He finished his career with a career .352 average which was a Cyclone record. After one of the best college careers in school history, he was drafted in the 4th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Larry Corrigan spent 7 years in the minors with the Dodgers and Twins but didn’t find the same level of success on the field as he had in Ames. When his playing days were done, he returned to the dugout in Ames as a coach. Larry Corrigan started as an assistant coach before taking the helm in 1981. Corrigan won a school-record 34 games in his first season and spent 4 years as the Cyclone skipper. Corrigan coached Cyclone Moonlighters Dave and Dan Flattery. His success at Iowa State isn’t what most baseball fans know him for though.

After leaving Ames, he headed a second time. Corrigan went to California to continue his coaching career. After a stop at Cal State Fullerton, he returned to professional baseball as a scout. Minnesota Twins fans have Corrigan to thank for some of their favorites from the last few decades; Torii Hunter, Michael Cuddyer, and Joe Mauer to name a few. After 20 years as a scout with a few World Series and many division titles on his resume, Corrigan is in the Professional Scouts’ Hall of Fame.
